Rather than relying solely on patient reviews or popularity, Newsweek and Statista R gathered input from thousands of medical professionals with knowledge of plastic surgery.
Between April and May 2026, doctors, surgeons, plastic surgery clinic managers and other medical professionals were invited to participate in an online survey. More than 10,000 votes were collected and analyzed for each procedure category.
Each surgeon’s score was based on three primary factors: peer recommendations, quality of care and board certification.
Peer Recommendations Accounted for 80% of the Score
The largest portion of each surgeon’s score came from recommendations made by other medical professionals.
Participants were asked to identify leading plastic surgeons both within their own state and outside their state. The order of their recommendations also mattered, with their top choices receiving greater weight. Surgeons were not allowed to recommend themselves.
In state recommendations accounted for 45% of the overall score, while recommendations from medical professionals outside the surgeon’s state accounted for another 35%. Together, peer recommendations represented 80% of the final score.
Quality of Care Accounted for 15%
Medical professionals making in state recommendations were also asked to evaluate the quality of care provided by the surgeons they recommended.
The evaluation considered factors that are especially important to patients, including the consultation experience, surgical outcomes, complications and follow up care. Surgeons were rated on a scale from 1 to 10, with the quality assessment representing 15% of the overall score.
Board Certification Accounted for 5%
The remaining 5% was based on certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS).
ABPS certification requires plastic surgeons to complete extensive training and successfully pass comprehensive written and oral examinations covering the field of plastic surgery.
