An important part of the breast augmentation treatment planning process is picking out implants, as your overall satisfaction with your results hinges on your choices. If you are petite, there are some special factors to consider.

Widely respected plastic surgeon Brian Reagan has helped women of all body types achieve their desired breast augmentation outcomes. Read on to hear what he has to say about breast implants for petite women.

Implant Size

Oversized implants can easily overwhelm you if you are short and slim. They may also feel too heavy on your chest, and make it difficult for you to run, jump and participate in other physical activities. When picking out your implants, think about the proportion of the implant to your body compared to your natural chest size as opposed to focusing on cup size (or even CCs).

Implant Profile

The profile of an implant refers to how far it projects from the chest wall.

Generally, low-profile implants have wider diameters than high profile implants and take up more room on the chest wall. If you are smaller in stature, low-profile implants could end up touching in the middle of your chest or extending too far out toward your armpits. High-profile implants project further from the chest wall without taking up as much “real estate” on the chest as low-profile implants; however, there is the possibility they will look too artificial if you are quite petite.

Implant Position

Your implants will be placed above your chest muscle or underneath it. For many petite women with little natural breast tissue, the latter option is usually recommended. The chest muscle provides greater implant coverage for a more natural-looking result.

Implant Type

You have a choice between saline and silicone implants. Most patients and surgeons agree that silicone implants offer a slightly more natural look and feel than saline implants. If you don’t have a lot of natural breast tissue to cover your implants, silicone may be the better option for you.
