Rhinoplasty is one of the most frequently requested procedures at Dr. Brian Reagan’s San Diego plastic surgery practice. There are many reasons patients seek out rhinoplasty, but some come up time and time again in consultation. Read on as Dr. Reagan lists the most common reasons men and women request rhinoplasty.
Enhance Aesthetics
Many patients seek rhinoplasty because they want to enhance the aesthetics of the nose. As the central feature of the face, the nose heavily influences the overall facial appearance and in some cases throws off the aesthetic balance of other facial features. For instance, if the nose is oversized, it may make the eyes or chin appear too small. Altering the size or shape of the nasal structures can bring the nose into better proportion with the other features and create a more harmonious facial appearance.
Other common cosmetic concerns that drive people to have rhinoplasty include:
- A dorsal hump, or a visible bump on the bridge of the nose that can be seen from a side view
- Oversized, asymmetrical or flared nostrils
- An upturned, drooping or bulbous nasal tip
- A nose that tilts or leans too far to the left or right
Correct Breathing Issues
Not all rhinoplasty patients seek surgery exclusively for cosmetic reasons. Patients often undergo rhinoplasty to correct breathing issues linked to structural abnormalities inside the nose. This approach is sometimes referred to as functional rhinoplasty. In many cases, functional rhinoplasty can provide aesthetic improvements, too.
A common structural problem seen in patients requesting functional rhinoplasty is a deviated septum, which occurs when the cartilage separating the nostrils is misaligned. Another is enlarged turbinates, which are shell-shaped structures that warm and humidify air as it moves through the nasal passages.
Boost Self-Esteem
Sadly, some rhinoplasty candidates spend years feeling self-conscious or embarrassed about a prominent or otherwise unattractive nose. For these people, rhinoplasty can have a tremendously positive effect on self-image and self-esteem. It is not unusual for rhinoplasty patients to say they feel comfortable in their own skin for the first time ever after surgery. Many claim that the confidence they get from surgery opens doors to countless professional and personal opportunities.
