Giving birth to a child can be one of the greatest joys in a woman’s life, but the physical changes that occur to the body along with pregnancy are not always viewed as warmly. Award-winning plastic surgeon Brian Reagan has helped many San Diego-area women who want to tighten up their bodies after having children. Here are three procedures he is most likely to recommend for their loose skin:

Abdominoplasty

No plastic surgery procedure is more popular among women who have recently given birth than abdominoplasty. When the belly expands during pregnancy, the surrounding skin stretches to accommodate its new size. If that skin is not elastic enough, it will not snap back into place when the stomach shrinks back to its normal size after pregnancy. Unfortunately, while diet and exercise can get rid of fat cells, these are not effective ways to eliminate “pooch” skin.

Surgery is the best option. Abdominoplasty, also known as tummy tuck, removes excess skin and drapes the remaining skin tightly over the abdominal muscles. During this surgery, Dr. Reagan also tightens the abdominal wall, which is generally pushed out of place by the baby while in utero, to give the stomach a firmer appearance.

Body Lift

Some new mothers find that the weight they have gained during pregnancy has taken a toll on many parts of the body, leaving fat deposits and loose skin not only around the stomach, but also the hips, thighs, buttocks and arms. Body lift is a surgical procedure aimed at getting rid of unwanted pockets of fat along with loose skin. Once skin folds are removed, the body’s contours become much more attractive.

For those patients who want to focus on a particular problem area rather than the entire body, surgeries like thigh lift or arm lift may be the way to go.

BodyTite

Women interested in a less invasive procedure may be drawn to BodyTite. Using radiofrequency technology, BodyTite not only reduces fat cells but also generates new collagen production, which helps to tighten up the skin. After a single treatment, the skin continues to get tighter over time, with the best results usually becoming visible about six months later.

Patients who still have a bit of pregnancy weight to lose may consider combining the procedure with liposuction for maximum effect.
